1. Pap locked Huck up because he had demanded that Huck gave him money every few weeks and when the widow told him to stop he kidnapped Huck.
2.
3. An abolitionist is a person that wants to end slavery. Although that sounds like a good thing Huck didn't want be called that because the area he lives in slavery is very popular. If people were to know that he was a abolitionist he would be very unliked by people and that could start to become an issue.
4. Three things Huck didn't look a like a girl - Hair length, he wouldn't take the bonnet off - Not being "girl" like, Huck didn't know how to thread a needle well and his aim was good when aiming at a rat - Voice, doesn't sound like a girl
Chapters 12-16
1. The story of King Solomon is that he chopped his baby in half. Jim does not like this and thinks he's a fool for doing so. Huck continues to go on about the dauphin, or the son of the executed King Luis XVI of France who is supposidly the wandering American. Jim decides to not beleive this or the fact that they don't speak english.
2. When Huck saw Jim asleep on the raft and woke him up Jim was relieved and excited that Huck was alive. After Huck tried tricking him that the separation never happened Jim then realized by looking at the raft with all the twigs and leafs all over it that it did and was mad at him for making a fool out of him. I think this shows that Jim really does care about Huck and that he doesn't have anyone else.
3. Jim is super superstitious. From a historical standpoint I think this is because he doesn't get very much education. It's very clear that Huck knows a lot more than Jim does because the never taught the slaves to read or write or had the ability to go to school. a) Back then the white people thought of themselves as more superier. Huck was taught this way but was still an abolinstinist which is why I think he was able to apoligize to him.
4. Huck was trying to decide weather or not he should turn Jim in. He was trying to think about why he hasn't turned him in and what would others do. Jim later thanked Huck for being his friend and Huck was happy he made the right decision.
Chapters 17-21
1. Huck woke up on the Grangerford's property getting questioned so he gave them a fake name. Buck, their son, who is the same age as Huck brought him inside. Huck was happy that he found them because they were very nice to feed and clothe him. He also learned that they had a daughter who passed away that loved to write.
2. Buck shoots a man and misses and Huck being confused asked why. Buck later explains that they've had a family feud against the gragerford aka farmer and the shepherd family, the ranchers for as long as 30 years to the point they don't even know why they are fighting anymore. The occupations the author is making about these two family feuds is how the farmers and ranchers could never decide who got which job since they are very similar which was a pretty big problem in the 1800s.
3. In chapter 18 Buck says, " I don't want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I'll cut it pretty short." When I read this the first thing come to mind was that something bad happened. Something had clearly upset him in someway. I had an assumption that someone was killed in the family feud battle and as I later read the assumption became true because Huck witnessed Buck lying dead which lead to him and Jim immediately leaving on a raft.
4. The King and Duke are con men. They were selling articles to get tartar off their teeth. They were being chased because the town wanted to tar and feather them for conning them for money. They were also pretending to be Harvey and William Walks in order get money froth family. Huck and Jim knew that they were run aways and were slightly supicitous about their lying but they wen along with their story anyways because they thought they would get along and knew there would be trouble if they didn't.
5. The Dukes idea for the raft solution was that during they they could pretend that Jim was a slave that they had captured and were bring back to the owner so that they wouldn't have to take the long ways to hide ji and they would have more time. The problem I see to this solution is that if they were to get noticed and questioned they might take Jim to doit themselves or word could get around town that he wasn't returned which would mean trouble for them.
6. Where the play would be held:
Chapters 22-26
1. The play was written for men. The handbill specifically states that women and children were not allowed. The men would prefer to come if their wives and children couldn't because they would have a night to themselves and the boys. This was also a time where they didn't want slavery to end or for women to have rights so when the men showed up to the play it was like saying they agree.
2. a) Huck thought there wouldn't be a point in telling Jim About King and the Duke because he didn't know that much about it. He thought that it would cause trouble and didn't want to get into an argument with him. He also knew that it was best that they traveled in a group for Jims sake so he wouldn't get caught. b) When Huck said, "You couldn't tell them from the real Kind." he meant that they were very alike from real royalty and not a lot of people would actually be able to tell a difference. The way they coned people into giving them ore money and advertising was very believable.
3. In the book it says, "It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race." What Huck meant by this was that he felt ashamed for going along with King and the Dukes plan. After they had heard about Peter Wilks death and how his brothers were supposed to have his will they decided that they would act as the brothers to get the money and land and Jim and Huck would act as the servants. Huck felt awful for lying and stealing from a family in grief that they didn't know and had done nothing to him.
4. The doctor noticed that the King and the Duke were frauds. There were multiple things that gave this away one being the kings accent. The doctor had noticed that it was fake and said it was the worst accent he had ever heard. Another thing was that they knew absolutely noting about Peter considering they were supposedly his brothers.
5. The King and the Duke considered taking the $6,000 in gold and leaving early but they decided to stay longer. They wanted to stay so that they could sell the land and slaves for more money. This was much riskier but that's the chance they decided to take.
Chapters 27-30
1. Back in the day staying up with the dead body was a way of tradition and keeping the body preserved. They would usually bless the body so that it's spirit had an easier way to heaven. While staying up with the body they would make sure that no rodents or bugs got to the body to keep it fresh for the funeral if thats what they decide to do, this would normally be the people that were closest to the person.
2. Huck has a very kind heart and has shown it throughout this entire book. In the time period he lived in people were very prejudiced against black people but Huck only cared whether or not they were a good person and he knew their color didn't determine that. When he saw that Miss Mary Jane and her family were hurting he told her that they would be reunited and see each other again soon.
3. The lawyer calls up four men, King, duke, and the two real brothers. The towns people had two methods to try to prove who the frauds were. He had all of them write on a paper to compare their hand writing to the letters that were written by them. The second way was one of the brothers said that He had a tattoo on his chest, the lawyer then asked what the tattoo was. They said they didn't see the tattoo and they had the person who was preparing the body look.
31-35
1. The lie Buck was praying about was wishing that Jim would find Miss Watson. Jim had been found and returned to slavery because all of the reward flyers there was for him. Buck wanted to write a letter toMiss Watson in hopes of getting Jim back but he then realized he couldn't because tat would mean h would've been helping out a slave which was illegal at this time. Buck prayed for Jim to find Miss Watson but he didn't't actually want that to happen so reconsidered it "praying a lie".
2. When Huck was writing his letter he started tearing up. In the letter it would've exposed that he was helping a run away slave and wouldn't end up well for nor Jim or Huck, He started crying because Him and Jim had gotten extremely close and Huck didn't want all of that to be gone and decided that he was going to get him back oneway or another.
3. I think that Tom Sawyer is a good guy for wanting to help Buck get Jim back. I don't really understand why Huck reacted the way he did because he is the one who talked Tom into doing it in the first place so if he is calling him a bad person for doing so then he is also calling himself one.
4. Buck saw the con men and the towns people were tar and feathering them, all tho they weren't good people Huck still felt bad for them. He was talking about the conscience and how cruel people can be to one another. What I think he meant by all this was that people will always do whats best for them no matter if it was the right decision or the wrong it's all about them what whether not it will benefit them or not
5. Huck had came up with a easy way to get Jim back but Tom decided to make a playoff his own. Tom's an adventurous guy and thought they needed to go go all out if they were gonna go some came up with a more complicated way of getting Jim back.
36-40
1. Huck and Tom's motivation of getting Jim freed are completely different. Huck has gone through so much with Jim and genially wants to help him, Tom on the other hand wants to take a very risky way into this and make it as adventurous and wild as he can.
2. When when and Huck were saying "let on" they meant that they were going to tell people a lie, like when they said, "we let on it took 9 months to make." They were basically saying that's what they were gonna tell people that even though it didn't actually take them that long to make because Tom wanted this to sound as extraordinary as possible.
3. Tom gave instructions to hit aunt and uncle and wrote a letter stating that Jim was going to be stolen and how it was going to go down because he wanted something in his mastermind plan togo wrong. He wanted this because he wanted everyone to know that he was the one that was behind it and the one who came up with it all so that he would be known.
4. The satire in the plotting was how easy they were making it seem to take a runaway slave. Buck wanted something quick and flawless and Tom just wanted a great story to tell. The escaped is very over exaggerated and seems way easier then it actually would be.
5. Near the end of the chapter Huck states, "I knotted he was white inside." What Huck meant by this was that even though he lived in a time period where whites were superior to blacks Huck saw past that all and didn't think color was an issue and that Jim was just as equal as any white person that he knew.
41-end
1. Huck didn't want to look her in the face because he felt so guilty. He left for a while to find a doctor to help Tom since he shot and when he came back he had to make something up as to why he was gone for so long. She was tucking him into bed and being super nice he he couldn't stand the fact that she was being to generous and he had just lied to her.
2. What this tells us about Jim is that he s extremely caring, When Tom got injured Jim stayed by his side the whole time and tried taking care of him until they found a doctor even though he was taking enormous risk of getting caught again. This shows how selfless Jim is and how much he really does care for others because there wouldn't be anything worse than getting back into slavery but it was worth the risk to save Toms life.
3. Tom is a very selfish man. The whole time he knew that Miss Watson had passed and that in her will Jim was set freeboot kept it to himself and made an extravagant escape plan just to get a thrill out of it. He wasn't doing it for Jim and as made it very clear that he didn't even like Jim but he did it so that he'd have a great story to tell.
4. Huck is a great character. He grew up with an abusive father who didn't teach him any morals what so ever he still came out a great person. He had influences all around him to hate black people and that their nothing more than slaves but Huck saw deeper than that. He was able to see through the color unlike most people in this time period and truly came to like and care for Jim. Huck has grown up so much through this book and became a loving independent boy.
